Situation expected to get worse before it improves

This is why you should never, ever give props to the Chicago Cubs.

Only a week after claiming first place in the NL Central, Chicago lost to Houston last evening 8-2 and have now dropped four straight. Amazingly, they're still only a game out of first place, but part of me is already seeing the inevitable happen, that lurid catchphrase "Completely Useless By September" arising from its ashes in the midst of another late-season suffocation.

Zambrano didn't pitch great (to be honest, for a guy getting paid $12.5 million, he played like shit), but I'd be more concerned about our hitting. The Cubs had no fireworks in their lineup last evening, with Soriano on the DL for a while and Aramis Ramirez missing last night due to a sore wrist. Angel Pagan, a reliable platoon hitter, is also on the DL. And then there's D-Lee, whom I'm a huge fan of, but we're coming to rely more on him for clutch hitting rather than power this season.

At any rate, the Cubs still may have a chance to win the NL Central, but that's as far as I think they can go. There's still just not enough consistency in this program to challenge the Mets, Dodgers, or heck, sometimes even the Cardinals still. Be patient...if you can wait 100 years, you can wait two or three more, right?...

Other junk:
  • So at least Brady's signed and Cleveland's long national nightmare will be postponed for about two more months. It really was much ado about nothing when you think about it, as Quinn's in about the same position as Matt Leinart was a year ago (although my prediction of $15 million guaranteed was wrong, it was half that for Quinn--not that he's poor or anything right now). Kudos to Quinn's agent, Tom Condon, for getting what seems like a good deal for his client, given that he was screwed over in the NFL Draft and now has the chance to show opponents he didn't forget how to play quarterback, as Kornheiser said yesterday on PTI. And as for this junk about him out of contention for the Browns' starting job?...I personally guarantee you'll see him start at least one game this year.
